The United Kingdom is made up of 4 countries: England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The geography of this small nation sweeps from mountainous highlands, to green rolling countryside and vibrant cities. With a population of over 63 million people the UK is the third-largest in the European Union and the 22nd-largest in the world. Almost one-third of the population lives in England’s southeast, which is predominantly urban and suburban, with about 8 million in the capital city of London.

Climate
The UK has very unpredictable weather, with many weathers being experienced in one day. Winter is between December and February. Winters are cold and wet (with occasional snow in high lying areas). Summer is between June and August and is generally warm with frequent showers.
Languages and Culture
The official language of the UK is English. Welsh is an additional official language for Wales, and Gaelic and Ulster Scots being additional official languages with Northern Ireland. The UK is a very diverse country with many foreigners calling it home with a wide variety of cultures and languages practiced.
Many languages are represented as well. The most widely spoken South Asian language in the UK is Punjabi, followed by Urdu, Bengali and Gujarati. The main Chinese dialects spoken in the UK are Cantonese and Mandarin. The UK is a diverse and multi-ethnic society, where students of all backgrounds are welcome and their involvement in local communities is valued. The UK has a long tradition of welcoming migrants and refugees from around the world, many of whom have settled here permanently. All major world religions are represented – mosques, Sikh temples, synagogues and Buddhist and Hindu places of worship can be seen alongside a whole range of Christian churches, from Anglican and Roman Catholic through to Nonconformist and Orthodox.
All this diversity means, when you come to the UK you will find it easy to settle in. You will also develop an enhanced understanding of different cultures by meeting other from an enormous variety of religious and national backgrounds
